Calcitonin is a peptide hormone which reduces levels of blood calcium (Ca²⁺) in opposition of the parathyroid hormone (PTH). It is formed by the proteolytic cleavage of a larger prepropeptide and is excreted by parafollicular cells of the thyroid gland.
