Sphingosinekinases(SPHKs)catalyzethephosphorylationofsphingosinetosphingosine-1-phosphate(S1P).SPHKshavebeenimplicatedinproliferation,survival,migrationandregulationofCa2+homoeostasis,developmentandregulationofthecardiovascularandnervoussystems,inflammation,immunity,andcancergrowth.TherearetwocurrentlyknownSPHKisoforms,SPHK1andSPHK2.ItisbelievedthatSPHK1andSPHK2haveoppositefunctions,promotingcellgrowthandapoptosisrespectively.
